1: Make Sure You Are Backing Up Your Files, Every Day
It’s amazing how many people say “of course we do that”; but when we ask the person that is responsible for it we find out differently. Or, they think that Carbonite, Dropbox, or some other consumer or free online storage system is a viable backup solution for a business.
2: Keep An Offsite Copy Of Your Backups
Where are your backups stored? On a tape in the back office? On a hard drive in the back office? Or how about the back of someones trunk? At least it is out of the building, but…that drive is made of spinning metal relying on magnetic forces (or the lack thereof) to maintain stability of the data. It won’t last long being kept in the trunk in the 100 degree Texas sun. Data should be backed up off-site, via the internet, automatically.
3: Check Your Backups On A Regular Basis To Make Sure They Are Working Properly
When was the last time you did a test restore of all that data? How long did it take? Not just that one Excel file, the entire directory or server. Was it all useable? Should your building end up being the proverbial “smoking hole” would you be satisfied with the results of your last restore?
4: Install, Configure and Maintain A Firewall
Do you go to bed, leave the front door unlocked, but lock the bedroom door? Of course not! So why would you leave the network exposed, but install a firewall on the PC (a.k.a. Software Firewall). You need a proven, industry standard, deep packet inspection firewall to protect the entire network.
5: Make Sure Your Virus Protection Is ALWAYS On AND Up-To-Date
You would have to be living under a rock to not know how devastating a virus can be to your network. With virus attacks coming from spam, downloaded data and music files, instant messages, web sites, and e-mails from friends and clients, you cannot afford to be without up-to-date virus protection. Not only can a virus corrupt your files and bring down your network, but it can also hurt your reputation. If you or one of your employees unknowingly spreads a virus to a customer, or if the virus hijacks your e-mail address book, you’re going to make a lot of people very angry.
6: Update Your System With Critical Security Patches As They Become Available
Software vendors don’t spend time and money to continually patch software just for the heck of it. You have already paid the money for the software, so there is no need to. But they know that new threats are being released by the thousands each day. If you are not taking advantage of the time and money spent by these vendors, and you do not have the most up-to-date security patches and virus definitions installed on your network, hackers can access your computer through a simple banner ad or through an e-mail attachment.
Protecting your business data, PCs, and network takes a 6 step, layered approach.
